Dr. John Andrew Martin Spotlight Article

Dr. John Andrew Martin is a board-certified family medicine physician who graduated from the University of Texas Medical School in 1996. He chose to specialize in primary care because he wanted to treat the whole person and build long-term relationships with patients.

Dr. Martin is passionate about offering care for each patient as an individual.

“Primary care is the essential care for a patient’s medical experience. It’s the centering element for a patient’s care as a whole, not just a heart or a colon or a liver,” Dr. Martin explains. “It’s like a puzzle. A puzzle, we see the whole complete person.”

He enjoys family care because it allows him to work with patients over their lifespan, from childhood up through adulthood and into geriatrics.

The patient relationship is Dr. Martin’s favorite part of his work. He is serious about providing the best, most appropriate medical care for each person.

“The most rewarding aspect of my job is the patients,” he says. “My job is providing the best medical care that is appropriate for my patient, not necessarily what’s trendy, but what’s the best medical care, and patients appreciate that and seeing them as individuals.”

In particular, Dr. Martin enjoys helping patients manage chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, or asthma. He aims to help people improve and maintain their health over the long term.

Dr. Martin emphasizes the importance of routine care for maintaining good health. He advises that all his patients follow the United States Preventative Services Task Force recommendations.

Yearly physicals are very important. Following the USPSTF recommendations for screenings and immunizations are also very important. I will tell the patient it is like getting routine maintenance on your car to keep it running, “Dr. Martin explains. “The best possible treatment plan for chronic conditions is following up with your primary care provider quarterly. It has been shown that can really improve quality of life and better control of chronic conditions.”

Throughout his career, Dr. Martin has found that his patients appreciate his commitment to following the best medical practices. He keeps up with the latest medical research and follows the best practices as laid out by professional organizations such as the American Academy of Family Physicians and the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force. His knowledge and experience help him offer all his patients the best care for their individual needs.

When not working, Dr. Martin enjoys spending time with his wife. He also engages in outdoor activities like biking, hiking, and kayaking.
