If you’re afraid your testosterone levels are low, you might be feeling like your masculinity is in question. We want you to know that low testosterone, also called low T, affects many men and can be easily treated.
As you age, your hormones naturally decrease, but sometimes, they drop more than they should, keeping you from feeling your best. Here are a few things our doctors want you to know about testosterone, why it might be low, and common symptoms you might be experiencing.
What is Testosterone?
In men, the pituitary gland stimulates the testicles to produce a steroid known as testosterone. It gives you masculine qualities, such as facial, body, and pubic hair, a deep voice, and strong bones. It also sparks sexual desire.
Why is it Low?
As you age, your testosterone levels naturally and gradually drop. In fact, some studies report that testosterone levels start declining as early as your 40’s and continue to decrease about 1-2% per year.
In men with low T, levels drop lower than normal and can cause many unwanted symptoms. Other factors can contribute to low testosterone levels. If you exercise too much, eat a poor diet, or suffer from hypogonadism, you might have low T.
Signs of Testosterone Deficiency
Many of the signs of low T are subtle. Over time, you may notice some of these symptoms, which can range in severity.
1. Low Sex Drive
Testosterone production keeps your sex drive active. If the hormone drops, you can notice a drastic decrease in your sexual desire.
2. Hair Loss
While balding is a natural part of aging for many men, if you start noticing a loss of facial and body hair, it could be a sign of low T.
3. Fatigue
If you’re getting enough rest at night but feel tired during the day, you might need to have your testosterone levels checked. Extreme tiredness and lack of energy are often signs your testosterone levels are too low.
4. Loss of Muscle and Bone Mass
Testosterone builds muscles and keeps your bones strong. If the hormone levels drop severely, you might notice a decrease in muscle mass and thinning of your bones. Lower bone mass can leave you at a higher risk of bone fractures.
5. Mood Changes
Testosterone levels impact your ability to concentrate, along with your overall mood. If your levels drop, you can suffer depression, lack of focus, and irritability.
If you’re struggling with any of these symptoms, it might be time to make an appointment with Healthcare Associates of Texas.
