Medical assistants perform essential duties that make our practices run. As a medical assistant, you’ll work in a care team with other medical professionals to provide patients a great experience. You’ll take patients’ vital signs, such as their pulse and blood pressure, record patient information, help keep exam rooms orderly, and ensure that patients have a safe and pleasant visit.

A day in the life of a medical assistant

Morning

You start your day getting ready to see patients. You review the list of patients you’ll be seeing.

Midmorning

You greet and prepare patients for their visit with the provider. You also take their vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse, weight, and height.

After lunch

One of the patients you see needs a diagnostic test. The patient is due for an EKG and you make sure they get scheduled for the screening.

Afternoon

After an appointment, you type up several pieces of information about the patient, including the reason for their visit. All this information lives in the patient’s chart.

End of day

You prepare the clinic for the next day. You stock exam rooms with supplies, clean and sterilize equipment, and make sure the exam rooms are orderly.
