What is Clinical Weight Loss?

Clinical weight loss is weight management under the supervision of a medical provider. A medical provider may include nutrition counseling, physical activity counseling, lifestyle coaching, and diagnostic tests to identify underlying conditions which may be contributing to unwanted weight. A clinical weight loss treatment program may or may not include medications as it is tailored to your individual weight loss journey.

    • Providers who create clinical weight loss treatment plans account for your lifestyle, underlying health conditions, physical limitations (such as an injury), and current medications.
  • Safe
    • In clinical weight loss, a provider oversees your treatment plan to ensure that underlying health conditions are taken into account. This helps you safely lose weight. In comparison, weight loss trends and diets can exacerbate underlying health conditions. For example, the Keto diet and the Atkins diets promote eating foods high in fat. These types of diets could be very dangerous for someone with high cholesterol and end up making their health condition worse. In clinical weight loss, this scenario is much less likely to happen.

    • Clinical weight loss helps you stay accountable while making long-term lifestyle changes; whether that be a change in diet, exercise, or making sure to use medicinal options or aids. This helps patients meet their weight loss goals.

What will happen during my clinical weight loss visit?

During your first visit, the provider performs a calorimetry and possibly other tests. The calorimetry test allows the provider to determine your daily calorie burn. By looking at your current weight, the provider learns how many calories you are consuming to maintain your current weight, and then works to assess healthy short-term and long-term goals. Together, you and your provider would designate a target goal on a day-to-day basis on what calorie goals should be met. We will give you a target goal to hit each day so that you can achieve long-term success that’s also maintainable.

What’s a healthy weight loss goal?

Our motto is “Slow and steady wins the race.” Patients experience the most success maintaining their weight loss when they lose weight slowly over time. When patients lose weight too quickly, they tend to gain back the weight they lost. A healthy weight loss goal may be three to five pounds a month, but each patient’s healthy weight loss goals will be different.
